Immies, Glummies and Beenies; A Tale of Baradoohn | Review

What would you do if you discovered a thousand-year-old immortals were living, working, going to school, and even shopping, in the most secret place in all the world?

When tragedy strikes the parents of Tristan, Charlie, and Eve, they are torn from their London home and whisked away into the Scottish Highlands to stay with their aunt and uncle.

While exploring the mysterious wood one night, they stumble across a group of human-looking immortals and become involved in a battle for their own safety. The children discover that immortals have lived for centuries in an undiscovered place called Baradoohn, the world's greatest kept secret.

After being rescued by their new immortal guides, the children learn they are wickedly hunted by the dangerous immortal, Markaeyla, though they do not know why. They must journey into Baradoohn and face the perils while trying to discover why they are so important.

Battles with teums, powerful trixes, Dark Age gangsters, angry peelerpots, and the all-powerful Divisional Ministry are just a few of the challenges that lie in their way.

Immies, Glummies, and Beenies; A Tale of Bradoohn is a fantastic novel written by Matthew Newell. Anyone can read it at any age! It was a light fantasy that included immortals and mortals, or as the book says, Immies and Glummies. Honestly, it is one of my best reads this month.

As I started the book, it gave me Artemis Fowl Vibes, like a whole universe underground, and I loved it. There wasn't a moment when this book let me down. It has been quite a while since I've read a book where the story is intended for a younger audience. So, I kind of didn't know what to expect when I first dived into it but as soon as I read the first few chapters, I got so invested that I read the entire book in a single read.

We have three siblings as main characters. Tristan is the oldest at 16; he is the responsible one out of the three siblings, but then again, how responsible can a  sixteen-year-old be! Charlie is a year younger at 15; She is the athletic sarcastic one, and I guess a bit smarter than Eve and Tristan because she was the one to try and stop them from going into the cottage! Then there is Eve, who is the youngest at 10. She might be the youngest, but she indeed was the bravest too, always ready for a new adventure.

The three have to move from London to a town named Auchindowen in Scotland to live with their uncle and aunt after their parent's tragic death, where they discover the world of Immortals or Immies. They meet Anghus, who leads them into the Immortal world's capital city, Baradoohn, which is underground. They meet new people there like Sebastian and Finyella. Charlie also learned to play a betting game, Kuzzle, which looked like a fun game.

They learn that some immortals have Trixes, like illusion, reading a person, or imitating voices. Trixes can be learned through hard practice and discipline. Immortals also have special dagger sticks called Teum, which they use in battles. There are so many fun plot-twists all through the book, and I feel like there should be a sequel!

One of my favorite characters in the whole book is Sebastian. I'm not sure if others will agree with me or not. I just liked Sebastian's overall persona throughout the book. He's a bit silly and always ready to get into a fight. He's a few hundred years old and still supports a childish behavior, and I am absolutely in for it. He can also be serious when he feels like it, and I just loved it when there was a fight going on, and he came, and well everybody just stopped and feared him.

I particularly liked the book because it depicted LGBT characters, Argatha and Markaeyla, who were immortals and had to hide their relationship through different eras, and how that was one of the reasons for Markaeyla's hate for the mortals.

In conclusion, I really liked the universe created here and how the plot progresses throughout the book. This book is a fun one-time read, and for children around the age of 10, they should definitely read it!
