There is one who will restore the balance. Reunite the Shadow and Flame.

On one fateful night, an insistent knock drags Maeva of Elecara out of a deep sleep. She rushes to her best friend’s side, Ophelia, only to have a stolen prophecy shoved into her hands. They must return a child goddess to her rightful place in the Afterworld.

With their other best friend Kiel, the three set off on an adventure through the kingdom that will not only risk all their lives, but Mae will find out what loyalty truly means, how far the bonds of her chosen family will go, and what it means to let the ice protecting her heart finally thaw.

Meanwhile, deep beneath the palace, in a room of stone, a prisoner is shackled and hidden. What are her choices? Try to free herself and meet the king's wrath or wait for a savior. Blinded and broken, the prisoner bides her time. If the Gods are willing she will see her family again.

INTERVIEW

Hi Elsie! So glad to be able to chat with you regarding your debut novel Shadow Rose. So can you start by telling us about how you got the idea to write Shadow Rose and Daughters of Moon and Sun Duology?

The idea came to me in a dream... cliche I know. However, I had a dream about a moon goddess and wanted to write her story. She didn't want to talk right away though, so that's where Mae came in. I also used Shadow Rose to heal from trauma. It helped me escape a world I was too afraid to be a part of.

Ah those beautiful dreams and I'm sure this book will help others too in the way it helped you ♡ . Shadow Rose is a sapphic fantasy book and I haven't personally seen many of those being talked about in the book community and I think that is the reason most authors do not write these romances because of it not being mainstream. What do you think about this under-representation and what inspired you to write this as a sapphic book?

I think the under representation definitely needs to be addressed. With some many identities out there you'd have a hard time finding people who don't connect with fantasies with different identities. I wrote Shadow Rose as an extension of myself, I am a pansexual woman and I wanted to explore the part of me that finds women attractive.

That's awesome and I'm sure with upcoming sapphic fantasy books we'll try to overcome the lack of rep. Fantasy books generally take longer to be finished and written in general with a lot of thinking and effort given to the world-building and plot development. With Shadow Rose which aspect did you find harder to develop the world-building or the plot development?

World building was definitely harder. I knew what my characters needed to do. I just didn't know where they needed to do it. I had a hard time describing the scenes I was seeing in my head - aside from the action.

What were your thoughts when you started writing Shadow Rose, and how did they contrast and changed by the end of the book?

I thought Shadow Rose was going to take on a more villainous tone but ended up being a ragtag group of friends who are fierce and loyal. As for in general - I thought I would never release Shadow Rose and now real people across the world are enjoying it.

Well I for one am glad this book was released. To end on a lighter note, do you have a particular writing quirk or a requirement, something you absolutely need while writing?

I always have Ru Paul's Drag Race on in the background.

Thank you so much for chatting with me and answering my questions!!
